I have been so busy with the farm, spring time you know, and with simply surviving the daily demands of life, that I have let the real issues of taking the best care of my children become less of a focus in my life. Now, don’t get the wrong idea, I take good care of my girls and the want for nothing. The problem has been in the desire to “unschool” them I have slipped in the schooling they need.
My girls are brilliant. They learn in ways that blows my mind. The way they learn, though, is not that different than the way I learned as a child and the traditional education system missed. I have had to take a step back and reexamine the ways I was set up to teach and do something new. Thus, unschooling naturally happened. But kids still need to know how to read, how to add, how to write, the list goes on. I want them to have the critical thinking skills that set the extraordinary apart from the ordinary.
So, here I am, covered in huge piles of papers and running my printer into the ground in hopes of meeting their educational needs while not making us fit into the traditional boxes most are forced into. All the while moving trays of seedlings out of the way to make room at the table for the traditional learning portion of the day before we move to the farm chores designed to teach us via unschooling.
The point of this was simply to say, “Stop comparing yourself to others!!!” We are all doing our best in a corrupt world. Homeschooling was never about having a classroom in my kitchen but to be there every step of the way teaching my kids different than I was. It has always been about protecting them and making sure that God was the beginning, middle, and end of our schooling so that he will be the same in every part of our lives.
I love that the word of God will speak to our hearts when we need to hear it the most. I feel like we need a reminder today and this is the verse I want to share with your heart.
“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Let this fill your heart today, and trust that we are the overcomers because Jesus overcome the world.
